The highly anticipated sequel to the beloved film Freaky Friday is well underway, with significant progress being made. The film has secured Nisha Ganatra as its director, known for her work on various successful projects such as Late Night, The High Note, and episodes of popular TV shows.
According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, the original stars of the 2003 film, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, are currently in negotiations to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel. Entertainment Weekly has revealed that the new movie will feature a unique twist on the original premise, involving a four-body swap scenario.
The sequel will see Anna and Tess swapping bodies with two teenage girls, Anna's daughter Harper and her fiancé Eric's daughter Lily, both of whom are 14 years old. Curtis and Lohan have hinted at their involvement in the sequel through social media posts, generating excitement among fans.
The original Freaky Friday, released in 2003 and directed by Mark Waters, was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $160 million worldwide. Both Curtis and Lohan received acclaim for their performances, with Curtis even earning a Golden Globe nomination for her role.
Disney confirmed the development of the sequel in May 2023, with production set to begin in Los Angeles this summer. The film is expected to delve into the lives of Tess and Anna two decades after their initial body swap, promising an entertaining and nostalgic continuation of the story.
The sequel is being produced by Andrew Gunn, who also worked on the 2003 film, alongside Disney's Kristin Burr. Ann Marie Sanderlin will serve as an executive producer for the project.
While specific release details have not been disclosed, fans can look forward to the return of the beloved characters in the upcoming Freaky Friday sequel. In the meantime, both the original 1976 film and the 2003 remake are available for streaming on Disney+.
