Frat boys versus the Power Five? That’s one way to describe an Alabama high school football season opener

The challenge of David going up against Goliath in high school football was rather poignantly summed up by one Alabama football coach this week.

He said that his season-opening opponent is so goodhow good are they? They are so good that when his players graduate and go to college, they’ll be in the stands cheering on some of the players they will face next week.

In doing so, Vestavia Hills (Vestavia Hills, Alabama) head football coach Robert Evans made it clear the talent discrepancy between his team and his season opener next week at Carver-Montgomery (Montgomery, Alabama).

Now, let’s get this out of the way: Vestavia Hills are no slouches; they finished 9-3 last year. But Carver-Montgomery has three big-time recruits in the class of 2025, underscoring Evans’s point about his own team.

Playing a tough schedule, Carver-Montgomery had a record of 7-4 a season ago. They are a talented and deep team, led by running back Anthony Rogers, a four-star who is committed to Alabama. In addition, Tristan Norman is a three-star wide receiver who is committed to Texas A&M.

And Terrell Russell, their quarterback, is a three-star with offers including Central Michigan and Georgia Southern.

Evans said that it is a tall task for his players.

“This guy is going to Alabama, this one is going to Florida, this one is going to Texas A&M and this one has 20 offers and we’ve got a bunch of Pi Kapp’s and Phi Gi’s that are going to be tackling the guys that they are going to be cheering for in a year or two,” Evans told journalist Chris McCulley.

Vestavia Hills opens their season at Carver-Montgomery on Aug. 22 and then travels to Auburn (Auburn, Alabama) the next week.
