Frenkie Dettori will bring the fizz to the party when he rides in this year’s Shergar Cup at Ascot for the first time in six years.
Dettori will captain the European team in the 10-nation competition.
“I love Ascot and it’s always a great day, so I hope people put it in their diary and come along to have a good time and enjoy something a bit different,” said the Italian.
“I remember when we won it in 2014 it was a really special day and hopefully, we can lift the trophy again this year.
“The European team looks really strong.”
Dettori will be joined by Antonio Fresu, leading rider in UAE, Arc de Triomphe winner Rene Piechulek from Germany and nine-times Spanish champion Jose-Luis Martinez in the event on August 6.
Since Dettori resumed his partnership with John Gosden after a brief sabbatical, he has taken on board the Newmarket trainer’s remarks that he ‘needs to be more focused and committed’.
After riding at Belmont Park on Saturday, where he finished second in both their Derby and Oaks, Dettori will be in action every day for the rest of this week, unlike in the past when it was usually just one mount at the weekend.
On Saturday, Dettori is expected to make amends for his defeat on Emily Upjohn in the Oaks at Epsom, where she finished second to Tuesday, in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh.
