Panthers officially name Bryce Young starting QB

Well, that didn’t take long.

Following the very first practice of 2023 training camp, Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich affirmed the obvious—Bryce Young is his starting quarterback.

Here’s what Reich had to say about the No. 1 overall pick’s opening outing in Spartanburg:

“I thought he threw the ball on time. There were a couple throws you guys probably saw, there was one or two that were super early. Completion to DJ Chark on a deep out route, got a little pressure, had to get it out super early. Great to show the ability to do that. Sometimes, it doesn’t always come out the way you draw it up. But there was a couple of examples of that today.”

Reich was then asked if Young is indeed atop the depth chart from here on out.

“Yes, he’s QB1,” he replied with a smile. “He is QB1.”

Young took the offense’s first snap of the morning, which was already a clear indicator of where the position now stands. Reich added that the rookie’s impressive development, as well as that of the players around him, has the team in a good spot already.

“I think we’ve made good progress,” he added. “I think Bryce has made good progress. You can just tell. He and the whole group on offense, just speaking about how we’ve progress things with an offense. You can just tell everybody’s feeling more comfortable with it—certainly Bryce is as well. So feel good about where he’s at.”
