Frank Lampard made 'easy dressing room decision' to help inspire Everton's win over West Ham

Frank Lampard said he had no doubts over Conor Coady's ability to lead his side as the centre back took the captain's armband for the first time at Everton.

Coady was one of several players thought to be in contention for the role following the injury that ruled Jordan Pickford out of the game against West Ham United. Pickford had taken on the responsibility in each of the six Premier League games of the season so far.

Lampard had been secretive about who would step up, telling his pre-match press conference on Friday that he had made his decision but refusing to reveal his choice.

It turned out to be Coady, the 29-year-old taking the honour after joining on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers - where he was captain before his departure. Lampard said it was a close call, with other teammates also boasting leadership credentials. But he had no concern over Coady's ability to lead the team out at Goodison Park on Sunday.

He said: "It was close in respect of there are some other players in the team with great personality. But in terms of Conor and himself it was an easy decision because he is a great lad, he has a great attitude, and he is a great communicator and he has added so much to the dressing room - as have others in the squad. So not a difficult one and I thought he performed really well."
