Frank Lampard given brutal Thomas Tuchel wake up call as Chelsea relegation theory explained

Frank Lampard has been told to count his lucky stars that Thomas Tuchel won 10 points for Chelsea before he was sacked. The Blues have continued to slip down the Premier League table after Brentford extended the Blues' winless streak to eight games, with Lampard having lost all five of his matches as interim boss.

Chelsea currently sit 11th in the table and just 10 points adrift of the bottom three; had Tuchel not picked up the results he did in the first five games of the season then the west Londoners would be tantalisingly close to the drop. Speaking on talkSPORT, The Sports Bar, Jason Cundy conceded that the Blues could be in a relegation battle.

Cundy said: "I’m actually numb to it now. I’m numb to what’s going on at Stamford Bridge. There’s so much wrong at Chelsea Football Club from top to bottom. I went there tonight thinking that a draw is the best we could get. Brentford! We’re in disarray.

"Forget the squad of players, the club is in disarray. There’s no getting away from it. I don’t think we’ll pick up another point this season. The best thing that’ll happen at the end of the season is that it ends and we reset and start again, as long as we don’t get relegated.

"We’ve got 39 points, but I don’t think we’ll get another point. Honestly, I don’t," added the former Chelsea and Tottenham ace. "Let’s say there were 12 games left, we would be in a relegation fight. I’m not saying that lightly.

"Thomas Tuchel is the only reason we are OK. If he didn’t get ten points, we would be right in it. It’s hard for me to say it, but as a football club, just end the season. Get it done, get it over and put us out of our misery. It’s been a disaster."

While the possibility of falling out of the top-flight is incredibly unlikely, their toughest fixtures are still to be played with four of the remaining six games against Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle. However, it's not entirely impossible.

As pointed out by journalist Kristian Sturt, for Chelsea to be relegated they'd essentially have to pick up just one point from their last six games. To leapfrog the Blues, Crystal Palace (12th), Wolves (13th), West Ham (14th) and Bournemouth (15th) would need just one win.

Then, looking at the bottom five, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City would need at least 11 points from a possible 15 to brush past Chelsea. With everything taken into account, Everton could overtake the Blues on 11 points from a possible 15 too, though they'd need to better their goal difference.

With regard to Southampton, who sit bottom of the table, Chelsea need four points from a possible 18 to extinguish the chances of finishing last. Long story short, a lot needs to go wrong for the west Londoners to be drawn into a relegation battle.
