Frank Lampard downplays worrying stat as Eddie Howe makes honest Everton admission

As the Blues digest their 1-0 away defeat at the hands of Newcastle United, it's time for your Everton FC morning headlines on Thursday, October 20.

Frank Lampard gives verdict on worrying Everton trend that continued at Newcastle

Frank Lampard acknowledged his side had not had a shot on target in 180 minutes of football but warned the statistic was a "red herring".

Everton failed to work Nick Pope in the Newcastle United goal or Hugo Lloris in the defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, losing both games by fine margins. They did, however, create two golden opportunities at Spurs and Lampard said he was pleased with some aspects of his side's attacking play.

The Blues boss said work at Finch Farm to improve that area of Everton's game would continue and added the return to fitness of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a significant boost. He also pointed to the failure to award a penalty for a challenge on Anthony Gordon as being a factor in the 1-0 defeat at Newcastle. Everton matched their hosts in a hostile atmosphere, competing in an end-to-end game that featured needle between the two sides. The teams were ultimately separated by Miguel Almiron's stunning first half strike. The visitors fought hard after that, and could have been given a penalty when Gordon went down under a challenge by Dan Burn but his pleas were waved away.

Asked what he felt was the difference between the sides, Lampard said: "The goal and maybe a decision that might have gone in our favour."

Eddie Howe gives verdict on Everton with 'questions' claim after Newcastle win

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe praised his team’s character after they held out to secure a 1-0 win over an Everton side that he claims “ask you a lot of questions.” Miguel Almiron’s sublime chip from the edge of the area on 31 minutes proved to be the difference between the sides at St James’ Park and condemned the Blues to a third consecutive defeat.

Howe said: “It was a hard-fought win. I don’t think it was our best performance with the ball, but defensively we were very good, very disciplined, it was a real battle in midfield and a very physical game.

“Everton are a team that ask you a lot of questions. Aerially, with Jordan Pickford’s distribution, there are a lot of balls going down the heart of our team and we had to find the answers to that, aerially and physically in the middle of the pitch with the second balls.

“We dealt with their aerial threat very well and our general structure and shape was good. Nick (Pope) didn’t have too much to do with his hands but he had quite a bit to do with his feet in terms of sweeping up balls inside our back line so full credit to the whole team over how we defended.”
