For more than a century, Frances Bones remained buried thousands of miles from the Oklahoma homeland of her Comanche family. She had arrived at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania in November 1894, having been sent there from Indian Territory with seven other Native children. Less than six months later, Frances died of pneumonia. She was buried in the Carlisle Barracks Post Cemetery, where she remained for 131 years.
Her story might have remained largely confined to school and cemetery records had Audrey Whitefeather Herrera not discovered that she was directly related to Frances' father, Chief Bones, also known as Chonip.
