France vs Spain LIVE: World Cup 2026 result, latest updates and fan reaction

France vs Spain LIVE

European champions Spain beat France 2-0 in the World Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, producing a controlled display to book a place in Sunday's final. Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute after Lucas Digne fouled Lamine Yamal ‌in the box, misjudging a high ball and kicking through the Barcelona winger.

Spain took command through their ‌positional play after an ‌even start, limiting France's chances and controlling the tempo. Pedro Porro doubled the lead in the 58th minute after a one-two with Dani Olmo sent him through to finish past ‌Mike Maignan. France were dealt a major injury blow in the first half as William Saliba, the Arsenal centre-back, went down on the half-hour, signalling to the bench that he could not continue because of a back problem, and he was replaced by Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix, who has been linked with Chelsea in this summer transfer window.

Spain, World Cup winners in ‌2010, will seek their second title against England or Argentina at ‌the New York/New Jersey Stadium ‌on Sunday.

Mbappe injury latest

19:45 , Oli Gent

Didier Deschamps insists Kylian Mbappe is fully fit for France’s World Cup semi-final clash with Spain, despite reports in France suggesting he is still struggling with an ankle injury.

The Real Madrid striker has either scored or assisted eleven of France’s 16 goals at the tournament thus far, and concerns were sparked when he came off with an issue late in the last-16 defeat of Morocco.

He hobbled off with 13 minutes of normal time left to play after taking a knock to his ankle in a heavy tackle.

Alonso makes France vs Spain prediction

18:07 , Oli Gent

New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso believes Spain are capable of winning the World Cup as they gear up to face France in the semi-final.

La Roja have been generally unconvincing in reaching this stage of the competition, requiring late winners from Mikel Merino to get past Belgium and Portugal in each of the last two rounds.

Standard Sport prediction

17:45 , Oli Gent

France have progressed through this tournament as smoothly as Deschamps could have wished for at his final tournament as manager of his national side.

He should be optimistic he can bow out of his 14-year reign with a second World Cup trophy to stick on the mantlepiece.

While Spain have pedigree, they have only had narrow wins and have failed to convince in quite the same way as their semi-final opponents.

A tight match is expected, but Les Bleus’ attacking quality is as unparalleled as it is dynamic and inventive.

France to win, 3-1.

Spain team news

17:37 , Oli Gent

Attackers Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino are available for Spain once again after suffering mid-tournament injuries, while new Liverpool winger Victor Munoz should soon be available after an injury of his own.

Lamine Yamal has not yet matched the heights of his performances during Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph but remains undroppable.

Spain squad: David Raya, Joan Garcia, Unai Simon, Marc Pubill, Alex Grimaldo, Eric Garcia, Marcos Llorente, Pedro Porro, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsi, Marc Cucurella, Mikel Merino, Fabian Ruiz, Gavi, Alex Baena, Rodri, Martin Zubimendi, Pedri, Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo, Yeremy Pino, Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal, Victor Munoz, Borja Iglesias

France team news

17:30 , Oli Gent

Kylian Mbappe was substituted during the second half of France’s quarter-final win over Morocco, but the joint-top scorer at the tournament is expected to recover from a minor ankle sprain. He described himself as “completely fine” at full-time.

Manu Kone was also withdrawn with a knee issue, but only as a precautionary measure, so should be available to start. Fellow midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is still recovering from a thigh injury which ruled him out of the Morocco tie, but he has since returned to full team training.

William Saliba and fellow centre-back Dayot Upamecano were both absent from the session on Saturday, but neither are thought to be carrying serious issues. Saliba was reportedly resting, while Upamecano undertook a solo session indoors.

Desire Doue should continue in attack alongside Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise, but Deschamps has so far been rotating between the 21-year-old and his PSG team-mate Bradley Barcola on the left wing.

France squad: Brice Samba, Mike Maignan, Robin Risser, Malo Gusto, Lucas Digne, Dayot Upamecano, Jules Kounde, Ibrahima Konate, William Saliba, Theo Hernandez, Lucas Hernandez, Maxence Lacroix, Manu Kone, Aurelien Tchouameni, N'Golo Kante, Adrien Rabiot, Warren Zaire-Emery, Rayan Cherki, Maghnes Akliouche, Ousmane Dembele, Marcus Thuram, Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue, Jean-Philippe Mateta
