France travel warning after three people shot dead

The Foreign Office has updated its guidance for France after three people were shot dead in Paris.

Shots were fired in the busy Rue d’Enghien in the 10th arrondissement of Paris on Friday morning (December 23). Three people were killed in the attack, which prosecutors say was racially motivated.

A 69-year-old man, from Paris, remains in police custody. He is facing potential charges of murder and attempted murder with a racist motive, the Paris prosecutor's office said.

Interior minister Gerald Darmanin said the suspect was clearly targeting foreigners, and had acted alone and was not officially affiliated with any extreme-right or other radical movements. The suspect had past convictions for illegal arms possession and armed violence.

New advice on Gov.uk warns people to avoid the area around Rue d'Enghien, adding: "If you’re in the immediate area you should take care and follow and any further guidance from the local authorities."

The Foreign Office is also reminding travellers that planned industrial action in the UK and France in December and January may "lead to delays or changes to scheduled travel within France and to/from the UK". It added: "Please consult your travel operator for the latest updates."
