France travel rule changes for unvaccinated tourists in Foreign Office update

France has reopened to unvaccinated British tourists ahead of summer.

On March 31, France moved the United Kingdom to the green list, lifting restrictions for non-vaccinated Brits. Unvaccinated travellers will no longer need a compelling reason to visit and will not have to quarantine on arrival.

However, a negative test must be presented. This can be either a 72-hour PCR or a 48-hour antigen test. Following the change, the UK's Foreign Office said they had updated their advice to reflect the relaxation of rules for travellers arriving in France from the UK.

No restriction shall apply when entering metropolitan France from a green list country or territory. The United Kingdom has been on the green list since March 31. No compelling reason is required for travellers to France.

Should you wish to enter the national territory from a “green” list country or territory no negative test on departure is required on departure for vaccinated travellers within the meaning of European regulations. These travellers must present proof of this vaccination to the transport company and to the border control authorities.

Unvaccinated travellers must present a negative result of a PCR test less than 72 hours or an antigen test less than 48 hours before departure (departure of the first flight in the event of a connection), or a certificate of recovery (positive result of a PCR or antigen test carried out more than eleven days and less than six months previously. This certificate is only valid for a period of six months from the date of the examination or test).

Self-administered tests whose results are not certified by an approved private test provider (e.g. free tests provided by the NHS) are not valid for travel. The NHS has stated that it will not carry out any tests for the purposes of travel. People should therefore use private organizations providing a similar service. No specific tests exist which are linked to the new variant identified. You can read the full advice on the French Embassy's website.
