France make last minute change to World Cup squad before heading to Qatar

France boss Didier Deschamps has called up Marcus Thuram as the 26th and final player for the holders' World Cup squad.

Borussia Moenchengladbach forward Thuram - the son of former France defender Lilian Thuram, who played alongside Deschamps in the side which won the 1998 World Cup on home soil - is the final player added to the group by the manager, who had initially named 25 players prior to Monday evening's deadline.

Meanwhiile, injured PSG centre-back Presnel Kimpembe has been replaced by Monaco's uncapped defender Axel Disasi, who is called up to the squad for the first time.

Deschamps had left room for one extra squad member to be added as he monitored fitness issues within his squad, and on Monday morning it became apparent that Thuram will be that player, while Kimpembe was ruled out having played less than an hour of football since September 18.

A tweet from France's official Twitter account appeared to confirm the news on Thuram, only to be swiftly deleted ahead of an announcement to come later in the day.

Thuram has scored 13 goals in 17 appearances for Gladbach this season, but has failed to net on his four previous appearances for France.

Deschamps faced questions from the media at last week's unveiling of the initial 25-man squad, with a particular focus on a recent decision to revert from a three-man defence to four, with young defenders such as Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate and Arsenal's William Saliba joining the more experienced Rapahel Varane of Manchester United.

“It will be four at the back,” said Deschamps last week.

“We did a lot of analysis (of recent games), and I had a lot of discussions with my staff and my players. The feelings expressed influenced my decision. We did some very good things in this system (with three at the back), but we were in difficulty on occasion. We were often imbalanced even if we turned around some bad situations. To win a competition, you have to be solid defensively.

“We will have to defend well, defend better, not at the expense of our attacking intent, but if I choose this formation I feel we can do both. The system leads to make different choices of players. There are nine defenders in the squad — one more than usual.”

On Konate, he added: “You don’t start at his age in a Liverpool team who have recently been European champions by accident.”
