Four years ago today- Tallaght Lidl's roof was pulled off during the big snow

Four years ago today- a stolen digger pulled down the roof of Lidl on Fortunestown Lane, Tallaght.

The building was almost demolished during Storm Emma in an event that shocked locals and people around the country.

2 March, 2018 saw Dubliners struggle to cope as massive amounts of snow brought the capital to a standstill.

At around 5pm gardai received a call that 30 people were attacking a Lidl on Fortunestown Lane.

Gardai tried to get to the shop but the roads were impassable from Storm Emma.

They rushed units to the area and then cleared it.

Then, at a later time, a JCB excavator was stolen in the area. Video footage then shows this vehicle demolishing a corner of the warehouse.

Gardai backed up by 4x4 Defence Forces vehicles rushed to the scene. Nine people were arrested after the callous crime.

Dublin Fire Brigade were called to the scene, but later left as there was no fire found on the premises.

They tweeted: "We have 3 fire engines from Tallaght & Dolphin's Barn stations responding to reports of a fire in a supermarket in Fortunestown Lane CityWest."

Local councillors slammed the senseless act of vandalism in the days that followed.

Local TD Sean Crowe said that the community was "absolutely fuming" at the actions of the people involved.

He said: "While the vast majority people in Tallaght are worried about weather conditions, getting to work, supporting their neighbours and helping the elderly, criminal elements have brought shame by looting and destroying local businesses.

The Lidl store reopened at the end of August in 2018, much to the delight of Tallaght residents.

The new state-of-the-art store is 70% bigger than its predecessor and thankfully all the old staff got their jobs back.
