Four storylines that were cut from Derry Girls as fans say goodbye to beloved show

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee has given fans details on storylines that were cut from the hit comedy as the show comes to an end.

The final season of Derry Girls came to an emotional ending last night and even saw a character die. Tonight, there is a special extra episode of the show which will pick up a year after the events of season 3.

Discussing the end of the beloved show in an interview with Digital Spy, Lisa McGee revealed some of the storylines that never made it to the screen.

One of those saw James at the centre when it is discovered that he had never been baptised, which leads to him having a christening as an adult.

Lisa said: "They do the whole Catholic baptism, like wear whites and get dunked in water and all that kind of stuff. So the gang have this huge fallout because they want to be his godparents, because you know you kind of choose two in the Catholic Church, so he's auditioning the gang for which two are gonna be the godparents.

"It just was very stupid, but that was a whole episode that was really funny but I couldn't find the political heart of it. So we had to leave it."

Another scrapped storyline, according to Lisa, saw the gang learning first aid with Orla, the notoriously not-so-smart member of the friend group, ending up saving someone's life later in the episode in a shocking turn of events.

Lisa called that one "one of the funniest things" she has ever written.

Another storyline that fans never got to see played out in the show would have seen James pretend to be a football fan.

"I had James pretend he's sort of really into football to try and make some friends, and ends up coaching this team," Lisa revealed.

Finally, Lisa described a story about Ma Mary and Aunt Sarah that never made it to air which would have seen the pair of sisters attempt to solve a local crime case together.
