Four Scottish holiday spots named among most pet-friendly summer destinations

New research has revealed the UK’s top 10 most pet-friendly coastal regions and four are found in Scotland.

With summer finally here and plenty of sunny days hopefully ahead of us over the next few months, there is nothing quite like heading to the coast to take in the views and soak up some rays.

If you have a dog, it's also a great opportunity to take them for a stunning waterside walk. However, not all beaches are pet-friendly, and it is important to know if dogs are allowed before heading to one with your four-legged friend.

Fortunately, to take some of the guesswork out of the equation, experts at outdoor clothing specialists Millets have investigated the most pet-friendly destinations around the country.

According to the research, the region of Scotland with the highest percentage of pet-friendly beaches — and fourth highest in the UK — is Lothian in the south of the country, with 83.33 per cent. Among the most beautiful spots in the area where you can take your furry friend are Cramond Beach in Edinburgh, Belhaven Beach in Dunbar, and Canty Bay in East Lothian.

Following behind in fifth place for the UK is Grampian in the north of the country, with 82.14 per cent of beaches being pet-friendly. Some of the top beaches here include Cruden Bay in Aberdeenshire and Cullen Beach in Moray.

The final two Scottish areas to appear in the top 10, at number seven and number nine respectively, are the Shetland Islands and Highland. The former includes gorgeous pet-friendly beaches such as Levenwick Beach and St Ninians, while the latter is home to stunning bays like Brora Beach and Thurso Bay.

The research also revealed that the Scottish area with the most beaches is the Highlands, with 46. Following behind in second place is Strathclyde, which has 43 beaches.
