Four killed as van rams lorry near Ambur

Four persons, including three women workers, were killed after a van collided with a lorry in Sholur near Ambur town on Thursday. Rash driving by the van driver, who was among the dead, might be the reason for the accident, the police said.

A group of more than 20 workers, mostly women labourers, from Vaniyambadi were travelling in the van to go to a private shoe making company in Kannigapuram near Ambur when the accident occurred.

The vehicle crashed into the median and hit a goods-laden lorry, which was going towards Vaniyambadi, resulting in the deaths. The accident happened around 8 a.m.

The dead were being identified by the police. Injured persons were shifted to the Government taluk hospital in Ambur. A case has been registered by the police.

“As the workers had to reach their company by 8.30 a.m., the driver must have gone in high speed resulting in the loss of control of the vehicle,” the police said.

As the accident happened during the rush hour on the national highway, traffic was affected for an hour, the police said.
