Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier has been criticised by former England and Blackburn striker Chris Sutton for his performance against the USA on Friday night as the Three Lions played out a goalless draw in their second match at the Qatar World Cup.
Having blown Iran away 6-2 in their opening match, Gareth Southgate's men were lacklustre and timid in the final third and struggled to break down an well organised USA side.
Moreover, England could've easily conceded in the first half as chances fell to Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie and Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic, both of which came as a result of mistakes from Trippier.

Despite England keeping their first clean sheet in five months, the 32-year-old was criticised for his display, with Sutton admitting that the right-back was 'lucky.'
In his player ratings column for the Daily Mail, the former striker rated the Newcastle star 4.5/10 for his performance against the USA, commenting: “Fortunate when Weston McKennie blazed over a glorious chance to open the scoring with Trippier not marking his man. Then lucky to see Pulisic – or ‘Captain America’ as he’s known in the States – smash his shot against the crossbar. Challenging night for Trippier.”
Although the result was disappointing, the Three Lions do have an excellent chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament as they sit top of Group B with four points ahead of their final group match against bottom side and old foes Wales on Tuesday evening.
