Fortnite OG: When is it coming back and what's included?

Fortnite OG Returns.

Fortnite OG is where it all began for this iconic battle royale, and it's hard to believe that we first dropped onto this island all the way back in 2017! Players have long been yearning to revisit this original incarnation, whether it's to see where their favorite game began or to fondly reminisce over old stomping grounds, and now Epic is making that a reality by bringing back OG Fortnite on a permanent basis. With the iconic original map and loot pool mixed with some more recently added mechanics to smooth out the experience, this is an exciting time to take a ride on the battle bus. If you're want to get up to speed, then here's everything you need to know about when Fortnite OG is coming back and what will be included when it launches.

When does Fortnite OG start?

The Fortnite OG release date has been confirmed as Friday December 6, 2024, as seen in the official announcement from the @FortniteGame account. This is a few days after the launch of Fortnite Chapter 6 that happened on December 1, but now we're almost ready to jump into the OG action.

Epic have now dropped a big announcement post ahead of Fortnite OG launching, so we have a lot more information about what's happening with it. To begin with we'll be travelling through the initial seasons of Chapter 1, with seasons in Fortnite OG being shorter than the regular battle royale, and Season 1 will run from December 6, 2024 through to January 31, 2025. You'll be able to play Solo and in Squads along with Zero Build straight away, with Ranked Fortnite OG being added at a later date. Although we're going back to the original Season 1, there will be some quality-of-life improvements made, so building will function as it currently does in the battle royale and all of the traversal mechanics such as sprinting, sliding, and moving while healing will be available.

Naturally, Fortnite OG will be going back to the original 2017 map as shown above, so you'll be able to revisit classic locations such as Anarchy Acres, Greasy Grove, Moisty Mire, and Wailing Woods. According to Epic, "Great care has been taken to ensure that every tree, Chest, car, and object is right where you remember it," so this promises to be a real nostalgia trip. When playing in Zero Build mode, additional Ziplines and Ascenders will be added so you can still traverse those harder-to-reach locations.

The Fortnite OG loot pool will be exactly as it was back on day one, so there are some real classics making a return, including traps that haven't been seen for a long time so watch out for players leaving those hazards for you! More items will be unvaulted as the season progresses, but this is the initial loot pool:

  • Assault Rifle
  • Burst Assault Rifle
  • Scoped Assault Rifle
  • Pump Shotgun
  • Tactical Shotgun
  • Pistol
  • Revolver
  • Submachine Gun
  • Tactical Machine Gun
  • Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle
  • Semi-Auto Sniper Rifle
  • Grenade Launcher
  • Rocket Launcher
  • Damage Trap
  • Ceiling Zapper
  • Wall Dynamo

On top of all that there will also be a new Fortnite OG Pass available, with 45 tiers of retro rewards to unlock, and you'll be able to earn the Renegade Rebel, Aerial Assault Bomber, and Skull Commander Outfits during Season 1 by earning XP in any experience. We can't wait to see what else will be added once Fortnite OG launches on December 6!
