According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, former Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins died Saturday morning after being struck by a car in South Florida. Schefter received the news via Haskins’ agent, Cedric Saunders.
Haskins was only 24 years old and would have turned 25 on May 3.
Haskins was selected in the first round — No. 15 overall — in the 2019 NFL draft by Washington after a record-breaking 2018 season at Ohio State. Case Keenum began that season as Washington’s quarterback and was eventually benched, paving the way for Haskins to play.

He would appear in nine games as a rookie, making seven starts. Haskins completed 58.6% of his passes with 1,365 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. The 2019 season was a difficult one for Washington as Jay Gruden was fired after five games, leading offensive line coach Bill Callahan to take over on an interim basis.
In 2020, Haskins would begin the year as the quarterback under new head coach Ron Rivera. He completed 148 of 241 passes for 1,439 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions before he was benched for Kyle Allen. Allen would suffer an injury, paving the way for Alex Smith to return to the field.
Washington released Haskins on Dec. 28, 2020, with Rivera saying it “benefits both parties that we go our separate ways.”
The Steelers signed Haskins on Jan. 21 and he served as the third-string quarterback in 2021 behind Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph. He was expected to compete with Rudolph and newcomer Mitchell Trubisky for the starting job in 2022.
