Former WA Police officer Adrian Trevor Moore on trial over alleged drugging and sexual assault of women he met online

A former WA police officer with "a preference for BDSM" and "inflicting pain" is on trial accused of drugging more than a dozen women and then taking photos or recordings of them being sexually assaulted.

WARNING: This story contains graphic content that some readers may find disturbing.

Adrian Trevor Moore, 52, was a serving police officer between 2007 and 2018 when he is alleged to have met 12 women through online dating sites such as RSVP and Tinder.

He met the thirteenth complainant in 2019 after he had left the police force.

It is alleged he used an unknown substance to stupefy each of the women so they could not freely or voluntarily give their consent to sexually depraved acts.

Jury to be shown confronting content

State Prosecutor Adam Ebell said much of the evidence in the case would be images and recordings found on a hard drive belonging to Mr Moore, which he warned the jury would find confronting and graphic.

He said while it is alleged the women were drugged, in the images and recordings they are not completely passed out or unconscious, but appear to "look out of it", "unfocused" and their "speech is slurred."

Mr Ebell said it would become "readily apparent" during the trial that Mr Moore had a preference for bondage, domination, sadism and masochism (BDSM), "inflicting pain on women", and "enjoying his sexual partners being submissive".

He told the jury that while Mr Moore was not on trial for his sexual preferences and the law does not care what two consenting adults do behind closed doors, it was alleged the women did not "freely and voluntarily" consent to what was done because they were drugged.

The court heard one of the women alleges she was mentally, physically and verbally abused by Mr Moore during their time together.

Mr Ebell said images would be shown to the court of her lying on the ground with words written on her body that included "I'm a copper's slut".

Another woman alleges she was raped by Mr Moore after he came to her house in his police uniform and attached something to a choker that was around her neck, hit her and then made her walk on all fours "like a dog".

Mr Moore used profession to gain women's trust

Mr Ebell said when all of the women "let the accused man into their lives … they did so trusting him because of his occupation … a uniformed member of the WA Police force".

Mr Moore is facing a total of 87 charges, including sexual penetration without consent, sexual coercion, and indecent assault.

He has pleaded not guilty to all of them with the court hearing the issue for the jury is likely to be whether the women consented, or whether Mr Moore had a reasonable and honest belief they had.

Most of the women maintain they have no, or only hazy, memories of the alleged sexual abuse.

One of them described herself as being unable to control her actions while another said she felt like she was having an out-of-body experience.

The court heard most of the women did not agree to being recorded or photographed and Mr Ebell said while some were told by the accused that he did not have a camera, that was a lie.

At the start of proceedings, Judge Alan Troy also warned the jury some of the evidence, including intimate recordings of sexual acts, was likely to be confronting for them.

Judge Troy said when the recordings and images were shown, the court would be closed to members of the public and the media.

The trial is expected to run for at least six weeks.
