Former high-profile sports presenter for Nine News Sydney, Cameron Williams, has been charged with a domestic violence offence.
In the early hours of Sunday morning police were called to a property on Putty Road at Howes Valley in the Hunter region following reports of a "domestic-related incident".
"Following inquiries, a 59-year-old man was arrested and taken to Cessnock Police Station and charged with common assault (DV)," police said in a statement.
Police confirmed to the ABC the man arrested was Mr Williams.
The Coogee local who resigned from the Nine network earlier this year due to health concerns was granted conditional bail.
In a statement, his lawyer Paul McGirr alluded that more details were forthcoming and that his client would plead not guilty.
"Cam Williams is a loving father to his children who is extremely embarrassed by all this," Mr McGirr said.
"At this stage, there's a lot more to the story, we'll enter a plea of not guilty, obtain a brief of evidence and then go from there."
Mr Williams started his journalism career in 1984 as a newspaper cadet at Brisbane's Courier Mail, later joining The Australian in its sports department before transitioning to television.
He worked in a number of broadcasting roles until 2006 when he signed with Nine working on some of their flagship programs including Today, Nine News and Friday Night Football.
His resignation from the network in March after 16 years came as a shock, with his departure effective immediately.
"It's with a heavy heart I have decided to resign from Nine. Leaving the best team in News is difficult and being part of that team an honour," Mr Williams said in an email to staff at the time.
"But I have struggled for years with increasingly poor health and I want to address that now for the sake of a more important team, my family."
Director of News and Current Affairs, Darren Wick, thanked Mr Williams for his "significant contribution".
"Cam is leaving us to focus on his health and then to pursue other opportunities that we look forward to hearing more about," he said.
Mr Williams is due to appear at Singleton Local Court this Thursday, November 24.
