Former Top Gear presenter Sue Baker dies at 67 after battle with motor neurone disease

Tributes are being paid today after the death was announced of former Top Gear presenter Sue Baker.

The TV star, 67, passed away after a battle with motor neurone disease. She appeared on the hit car show for more than a decade.

Sue passed away at home "with family around her", a statement released on Monday said.

"It is with very great sadness, that we share the news of Sue’s passing," a statement obtained by the Mirror read.

"A doting mother to Ian and Hannah, a loving grandmother to Tom and George, a wonderful mother-in-law to Lucy. She passed at home this morning with family around her."

It went on to describe Sue as a "talented and prolific writer, a charismatic TV presenter, and a passionate animal lover", gushing over her career and life.

It continued: "[She] did it all with such grace that she was admired and respected by all who knew her. We know she meant so much to so many.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported her over the last few years as she battled with MND."

Sue was a presenter on the original format of Top Gear from series four in 1980 and appeared in over 107 episodes until series 25 in 1991.

Following the sad news of her death, tributes poured in for the late presenter on social media.

The Guild of Motoring Writers said: "We are deeply saddened to learn our vice-president and former chair, @carscribe Sue Baker, passed away this morning following a long illness.

“Sue was a pioneer for women in automotive journalism and a former presenter of @BBC_TopGear. A full tribute will be published later."

A different account put: "Rest in Peace Sue."

Another follower wrote: "Truly sad news. Rest In Peace Sue Baker" with a crying emoji.

A different account said: "What a shame! A truly lovely lady, a fabulous writer and a great presenter. RIP" with a heart emoji.

Another person wrote: "Heartbroken to read this - Sue was a wonderful woman who always had time for everyone and anyone. My condolences to her family."

While a different account added: "Truly heartbroken to hear this. Sue was such a wonderful person as well as a fantastic journalist. She was a pleasure to host and always made you feel like a friend. Sending condolences to her family and loved ones."
