Former Take That star Robbie Williams 'puts name forward' for Eurovision 2023 performance

Former Take That star Robbie Williams says he's put his name forward to appear on next year's Eurovision.

However, the 48-year-old insists he's not going to be the next hopeful to avoid the dreaded "nil points" and instead is hoping he can perform during the half-time show.

The singer detailed his love of the singing competition and said he's hopeful he can be a part of the next show, reports The Mirror.

He said: "I've already put my name forward, not for the UK but the half time part."

This year's show saw a total of 189 million views over the two weeks leading up to the final showcase, with eight million tuning in to the live final. Putting aside recent failures in the competition, UK's Sam Ryder was just pipped to the post by Ukraine's Kalush in what was a surprising turnaround for the UK.

Robbie continued: "I thought I'll have a bit of that. No one did it until Justin Timberlake did and Madonna. I was like I wanna do that like those people. So, I put my name down. I hear it might be in the Ukraine but I'm like I'll still go! I really love the Eurovision."

He opened up on how he felt people could win the competition and simply said: "Get a great song and get someone great to perform it and we won't come last."

Israel's hosting duties in 2019 saw Queen of pop Madonna, 63, take to the stage to sing her 1989 hit song Like A Prayer. It had followed Justin's performance a few years earlier in 2016 as the now-41-year-old song Can't Stop The Feeling in Sweden.

Speaking to Graham Norton at the time, Justin said he had agreed to take part before he really knew what was in store.

He said: "Then, when I told people I was doing it they would respond with, 'Oh, why are you doing that show?' I thought, 'why not, a lot of people watch it!' It was a lot of fun."

Robbie is set to release his latest music in September this year as he bids to bag his 14th number one album in the UK. He currently shares the record for most number one solo albums with Elvis Presley.
