Former RTE host Eoghan McDermott posts statement on 'devastating' split from girlfriend Aoife

Eoghan McDermott has spoken out about his split from long-term girlfriend Aoife Melia, saying the last 18 months have been 'devastating'.

It was reported yesterday that Eoghan and Aoife, a doctor, had broken up following Eoghan's surprise exit from his RTE 2FM show. Aoife is now dating heir of the Tayto Crisps empire, Charlie Coyle.

Eoghan posted a lengthy statement on Instagram last night, speaking about the last 18 months since leaving RTE and praising his ex after a difficult year.

He wrote: "The last 18 months have been devastating and life-altering in ways that I haven’t fully processed yet. I met Aoife 15 years ago and think she has been and will remain the most wonderful person I’ve ever known.

"I’m sorry we didn’t get to see our story have a happy ending and so sorry for the turmoil that upended her life, through no fault of her own. All I can do is thank her for the many wonderful years together and wish her evert happiness in her new life.

"Pretty much every bit of myself I’ve worked on and improved over the years has been on account of wanting to live up to her standards and match her best qualities. She made me kinder, gentler, more patient, less selfish and better in most ways a person could measure.

"I hope she finds the happiness and peace she so rich deserves. That’s all. Take care everyone. Look after yourselves."

The former radio star had been dating Aoife for several years and the couple were living together in his south Dublin apartment. Eoghan's career came to a crashing halt in February 2021 when he suddenly left 2FM.

No reason at the time was offered for his exit. However after almost a year, he publicly addressed the reasons for his absence.

Mr McDermott said: "A few months ago, false allegations were made about me. Despite not being investigated or verified, these allegations were spread widely, the effects of which I am still processing. I hope the below can close this chapter. At the request of and with consideration for the other party to this dispute, I will not be commenting any further on this matter."

Eoghan included a letter issued by Mary Cowhey Solicitors, representing his accuser, to his own solicitor, Paul Tweed. The letter said their client had admitted to making false allegations against the presenter.
