Former Rangers star who signed on same day as Tavernier quits club after 46 days

Former Rangers forward Martyn Waghorn has parted ways with Northampton Town after just 46 days.

Now aged 34, Waghorn was on a short-term deal at the English League One outfit, however leaves by mutual consent, having scored one goal in eight appearances.

Waghorn signed at Ibrox from Wigan on the same day as James Tavernier in the summer of 2015 and left the club after two seasons, having netted 44 goals in 78 appearances across all competitions - 28 of those scored in his debut season.

In the summer of 2016, the striker was offered an extra year on his contract – which would have seen him remain at Rangers until the beginning of the 2018/19 campaign – however this was rejected.

Waghorn instead left for Ipswich Town ahead of the 2017/18 season.

Northampton are currently under the caretaker control of Ian Sampson following the resignation of manager Jon Brady earlier this month.

As reported by the BBC, Sampson said the decision to part ways with Waghorn was "amicable" and that the player had helped his side through the last few weeks.

Sampson said: "All parties have now agreed to terminate the contract. We thank Martyn for his time with the club and we wish Martyn and his family all the very best for the future.

Sampson also described Waghorn as a "good man" and "first-class character".
