Former Rangers star urges Ibrox board to give Giovanni van Bronckhorst 'time and stability'

Kenny Miller has urged the Rangers board to back Giovanni van Bronckhorst like they did Steven Gerrard.

The Light Blues boss has come under fire after two back-to-back four-nil hammerings. The first came in the opening Old Firm derby of the season against title rivals Celtic before Ajax rubbed further salt into the wounds in their Champions League group stage opener in Amsterdam on Wednesday night.

Napoli, who have yet to lose in Serie A and currently sit in top spot and battered Liverpool on matchday one in the group, are next up following the SPFL fixture postponements this weekend. Rangers were due to face Aberdeen but the full card was called off as a mark of respect following the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96.

Miller has asked for calm from the Ibrox board with Gerrard failing to win anything in his first two seasons in charge. That stability and continuity paid off big time in his third campaign with the Light Blues ending Celtic's ten-in-a-row hopes and in doing so, lifting their first Premiership crown in a decade.

Van Bronckhorst won the Scottish Cup last season and also went all the way to the Europa League Final. Miller believes the Dutchman needs time. He's more than aware performances have to improve drastically but knows Gio and his coaching team can get massive results out of the current group, as previously shown.

He told the Sunday Mail : “The Rangers board have to be calm now. The biggest positive about the whole Gerrard reign at Ibrox was stability and continuity.

“They stuck with him, despite the fact he didn’t win anything for two years. That patience and faith they showed in him led to 55.

“Gio has come in and in his first year won a Scottish Cup and reached a European final, so he deserves time. Of course, there has to be a drastic improvement in current performances.

“But as long as the board believe that he’s the right man for the job, he needs time and stability. He needs the chance to get a bigger tune out of these players.

“He has already shown he can by reaching the Europa League Final, when they competed with some huge clubs. There is ability, fight, desire and quality within this group. Gio and his staff have shown they can get that out of them. They coached them to some big results.”
