Former Rangers boss Graeme Murty 'in running' for job at mega-rich EPL side in sensational return

Graeme Murty could be set for a sensational return to football at mega-rich Newcastle United, according to a report.

The Daily Record say the former Rangers boss is in the running for a job with the English Premier League club's academy. The 47-year-old has a wealth of experience operating in that role from his time at Ibrox with the majority of his spell at the club spent working within that position.

The former Scotland defender also had to take charge of the Rangers top-team on two occasions at the request of the Ibrox board during his five years at the club. Murty left at the end of last year and was close to landing a job with Scottish Championship outfit Ayr United before they decided to go with Lee Bullen. A club statement on his departure from November last year read: "Rangers FC can confirm that Head of Elite Academy Development, Graeme Murty, will be leaving the club.

"Rangers FC thank Graeme for his outstanding service throughout his five years at the club, including when he stepped up to take on first-team responsibilities at the request of the Board.

"Graeme has played a leading role in the development of our Academy players and practices, leading our development squad to success in the SPFL Reserve League and managing our first steps into the UEFA Youth League in 2019.

"We wish Graeme every success in his future career."

Murty started his playing career at York City before making the move to Reading.

He spent 11 years at the club that included a loan spell at fellow English club Charlton Athletic.

After joining the Royals in 1998 he left for Southampton in 2009 and was also capped by the Scotland national team on four occasions.
