Here’s what Poleigh had to say:
Tannoy announcements
“Have you ever heard someone over the Tannoy go: 'could Mr Brown please come to the customer service checkout'?
“Let me tell you who that is - say your security company, that stands by the door and makes sure nobody's stealing, say their name is like Brown Security Services, that's who they're calling.
“So, when they say 'Can Mr Brown please come to the customer service checkout' they're actually calling for security; they just don't want the customers to know that.”
Why staff check the bags you’re buying
“You know when you go to the till, if you've got like a makeup bag or something we'll always open it up and take out the tissue.
“That's to check that you're not stealing. So we have to take the tissue out to check that there's nothing else in the bag. However, we're not actually allowed to accuse you of stealing.
“So we could open that bag and find like 10 pieces of jewellery and three pairs of socks in there - can't accuse you of stealing it, we just have to simply say 'would you like that as well?'. And I can tell you like 10 out of 10 times the answer is 'er no thanks'.”
What the call bells mean
“One ring of a call bell - we want some extra staff here guys, it's busy. Two rings of a call bell - we want a supervisor or a manager's help
“If you hear three rings of a till bell - run. I'm joking - it just means there's an emergency.”
Till secrets
“When I used to work at Primark you can actually choose if you have a male or a female saying 'till number five please'. There's two buttons under the till. One's a man's voice, one's a woman's voice.”
Staff discount
“No, staff do not get staff discount. We got like 10% off at Christmas.”
Can staff shop at Primark?
“Any staff member who wants to buy something actually from Primark has to take it to the customer service desk and handover their ID number when they buy it. That includes any store, not just the store they work in. You can't buy anything at a normal till.”
Code two
“A code two - it just so happens that some customers like to use the floor as a toilet. I've actually experienced this myself and it particularly happens in the changing rooms. I don't know why.
“A code coming across the Tannoy for the cleaners means that they're just being made aware that yeah, they're gonna be cleaning up some bodily fluids.”
Damaged goods discount
“If you've got a slight bit of dirt, slight bit of damage on an item and they don't have any more of them in your size, take it to the till. If you're still happy to buy it, that's 10% off.”
The stockroom
“If you ask someone 'oh do you have any more of these out back?', you ain't gonna get it. Nine times out of 10 you ain't getting it.
“And that's not because they're not trying to look for it, it's because down in that stock room the boxes are literally from the floor to the ceiling - with barely any labels. And that's because Primark has new stock pretty much every week, every day even.”
