Former President Trump Supports Tiktok As Competition To Facebook

Former President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally in Hialeah, Fla., Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, former President Donald Trump expressed his support for TikTok, citing the need for competition in the social media landscape. Trump stated, 'Now [that] I’m thinking about it, I’m for TikTok because you need competition.' He highlighted the dominance of Facebook and Instagram, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, and emphasized the importance of having alternatives.

Despite previously raising concerns about TikTok's ties to China and attempting to ban the app during his presidency, Trump has now shifted his stance and even joined the platform, describing it as an 'honor.'

During the interview, Trump also criticized social media platforms for their negative impact on young people, stating that they have become too powerful and are influencing youth in harmful ways. He expressed concerns about the potential for social media to contribute to issues like suicides among young individuals.

Interestingly, Trump's remarks included both criticism and praise for social media companies. While he acknowledged the negative effects they can have, he also expressed respect for them and emphasized the importance of not destroying these companies through aggressive actions.

Trump's evolving views on social media reflect the complex relationship between technology, competition, and societal impact. His support for TikTok as a competitor to established platforms like Facebook and Instagram underscores the importance of diversity and choice in the digital space.
