Former Politician Convicted Of Killing Investigative Journalist

District Judge Michelle Leavitt speaks during a hearing for a juror question during deliberations for murder trial for Robert Telles, a former Clark County public administrator charged in the m

A former Las Vegas-area politician is awaiting sentencing in Nevada state prison after being found guilty of murdering an investigative journalist who had written critical articles about him. The convicted politician ambushed and killed the journalist outside his home during Labor Day weekend in 2022. The jury sentenced the politician to 20 years to life, with the possibility of additional years added by the judge before parole eligibility.

The journalist, who was 69 years old and had a long career covering crime and corruption in Las Vegas, had exposed the politician's misconduct and a romantic relationship with a coworker. Following the journalist's articles, the politician lost his bid for re-election and had his law license suspended.

During the trial, the politician denied the murder allegations, claiming he was framed as part of a conspiracy. However, DNA evidence linking him to the crime was presented, including his DNA found under the journalist's fingernails. The prosecution argued that the politician held a grudge against the journalist for damaging his career and reputation.

The sentencing hearing included emotional testimonies from the journalist's family members and pleas for leniency from the politician's relatives. The district attorney expressed confidence that the judge would impose a sentence that could keep the politician incarcerated for life, citing his lack of remorse and continued danger to the community.

The conviction of the politician was seen as a message against violence towards journalists, as the journalist was the only one killed in the U.S. in 2022. The Committee to Protect Journalists highlighted the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for such crimes.

The politician's attorney indicated plans to appeal the conviction, prolonging the legal proceedings in this high-profile case.
