A former Philadelphia police officer, Edsaul Mendoza, has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and possession of an instrument of crime in connection with the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy in March 2022. The incident occurred when Mendoza, along with three other plainclothes officers, encountered the boy and another individual during a patrol.
According to Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, the boy, identified as Thomas “TJ” Siderio, allegedly fired at the officers' vehicle, prompting a response from the officers. Mendoza engaged in a pursuit of the boy, ultimately shooting him three times despite the boy having thrown away the gun.
Krasner emphasized the importance of accountability and justice in this case, stating that everyone must be held responsible under the law. The initial charge of first-degree murder against Mendoza was dismissed, and he now faces a potential sentence of up to 40 years for third-degree murder.
Following the incident, Sergeant Eric Gripp of the Philadelphia Police Department described it as a tragedy and highlighted the department's commitment to serving the community with honor and integrity. Gripp expressed that the actions of one officer do not reflect the professionalism of the thousands of dedicated officers in the department.
Mendoza was subsequently fired by Police Commissioner Danielle M. Outlaw for violating the department's use of force directive. The former officer is scheduled to be sentenced in late July, as the community awaits the legal resolution of this tragic event.
