From the creators of Wife Swap, the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns bring to you . . . QB Stew!
Both teams wanted the legally embattled Deshaun Watson this spring. And the Browns got him.
The Browns then wanted to move on from their disgruntled former No. 1 overall pick, Baker Mayfield. And the Panthers came in and got him.
Now, the Browns may want the greatest passer in Panthers history. And according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, it could be a matter of time until the they get him.
“There’s apparently some chatter about the possibility of the Browns adding Cam Newton, in the event that Watson isn’t available for the full season,” Florio writes. “Would Newton be an option for half of the season? Would he be the backup to Brissett or the starter?”
That last sentence goes to show how unforgiving the game of football, especially when it’s buried in the business of NFL, can be. Seven seasons ago, a 26-year-old Newton had the AP Most Valuable Player award in his hands and just about the entire league at his feet. Now, he might be valued as a backup to a backup in Cleveland.
Well, the most recent domino in this offseason’s quarterback shuffle to fall (Mayfield) will likely prove to be the last. With every team seemingly locked into some sort of plan under center, Newton may not get the opportunity he was looking for.
Will he sign this summer? Will he sign during the regular season? Will he sign at all in 2022?
Time will tell.
