Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 81, hospitalized in critical condition

Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani has been hospitalized in critical condition in Florida, his team said.

“Mayor Rudy Giuliani is currently in the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition,” his spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday.

“Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak. We do ask that you join us in prayer for America’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani.”

It’s unclear what led 81-year-old Giuliani to be taken to the hospital. It is also unclear how long he’s been there or what his prognosis is.

His hospitalization comes days after the Republican told his talk show audience that his voice was “a little under the weather”.

Giuliani coughed as he began his nightly online show "America's Mayor Live". As he spoke, he sounded more raspy than usual. Before launching into a commentary on the Iran war, he remarked: "My voice is a little under the weather, so I won't be able to speak as loudly as I usually do, but I'll get closer to the microphone."

A native New Yorker, Giuliani was elected mayor in 1993 after serving as one of the nation's highest-profile federal prosecutors, taking on mobsters and crooked Wall Street traders.

He ran for the US Senate in 2000 but abandoned his race against Hillary Rodham Clinton after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Giuliani's eight-year tenure as the mayor of the nation's largest city was punctuated by the 9/11 attack in his final months in office, and he became celebrated as "America's mayor" for his leadership after the 2001 al-Qaida terrorist attack that felled the World Trade Center twin towers.

In 2008, he made an unsuccessful run for president and ended his bid after he finished third in the Florida primary, eventually endorsing Republican nominee John McCain.

Giuliani had grown close with Donald Trump over the years and was one of the leaders in the push to contest the 2020 election which Trump lost to Joe Biden.

Last year, Trump said he was awarding Giuliani the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Trump released a statement after news of Giuliani’s hospitalisation.

“Our fabulous Rudy Giuliani, a True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR, has been hospitalized, and is in critical condition. What a tragedy that he was treated so badly by the Radical Left Lunatics, Democrats ALL — AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING! They cheated on the Elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our Nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad!,” the president wrote on Truth Social.

Sunday’s report of hospitalization is the latest for Giuliani in recent months. In late August, he was rushed to a hospital after a car wreck in New Hampshire. He had sustained a fractured thoracic vertebra following the crash, as well as multiple lacerations and contusions and injuries to his left arm and lower leg.

He was later released and attended a 9/11 memorial in New York City.

Dashcam video showed Giuliani’s car being hit by 19-year-old Lauren Kemp on I-93 on August 30.

The former mayor has also faced a series of legal battles in recent years.

In February 2025, his lawyers said that Giuliani had fully paid the $148 million he owed to two Georgia election workers he defamed. The judgment culminated a series of court cases against Giuliani over the 2020 election.

Giuliani, who was an advisor to Trump and his former attorney, repeated false claims and accused the election workers of manipulating the election results. That led to a series of harassment and abuse at the women.

In November 2025, Trump pardoned Giuliani and others who helped in his efforts to contest the 2020 election. Giuliani, Jenna Elis and others on Trump’s legal team argued that widespread voter fraud had taken place across the nation and changed the vote totals so Biden would win.

Trump’s team was never able to give direct proof of the conspiracy and instead relied on affidavits from his supporters that claimed they saw nefarious activity.

Giuliani became the face of the legal team during the efforts.

“Mayor Rudy Giuliani stands by his work following the 2020 presidential election, when he responded to the legitimate concerns of thousands of everyday Americans. Mayor Giuliani never sought a pardon but is deeply grateful for President Trump’s decision. This action further highlights the years of unjust attacks against the mayor and so many others, and reinforces what should now be clear to everyone—Mayor Giuliani deserves to have his bar license immediately reinstated without delay,” his spokesperson, Ted Goodman, told The Independent at the time.
