Former Nottingham Forest manager set to join Russell Martin's Swansea City coaching team

Northampton Town assistant Colin Calderwood is set to join Russell Martin's coaching staff at Swansea City.

It's understood that the former Nottingham Forest boss is set to leave his current role at Sixfields to reunite with Martin, whom he worked with at Norwich City.

Martin's coaching team has been carrying a vacancy ever since the departure of Luke Williams in February, a move that saw Matt Gill step up from his role as technical development coach to serve as Martin's number two in the dugout at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Gill is now set to take on that role on a permanent basis, with Calderwood brought into a fulfil a coaching role in Martin's backroom team, although sources inside the club have stressed to WalesOnline that a deal has not yet been completed.

The former Scotland international's current club saw their season ended at the hands of Mansfield Town in the League Two play-off semi-finals on Wednesday, but a deal could well be confirmed in the coming days.

Sixfields is where the former Tottenham defender started his managerial journey, although he's also taken roles at Hibernian, Cambridge United and Forest. He was also assistant head coach at Blackpool before rejoining the Cobblers in 2021.

Calderwood knows Martin well having served as assistant to Chris Hughton at Carrow Road, and his appointment will likely just be one part of some big changes on and off the pitch in SA1 this summer.

The club are still seeking a successor to Mark Allen, who left the club last month. It's understood any replacement will likely serve in a recruitment role rather than the sporting director position previously held by Allen.

There's hope within the club that an appointment will be made either later this month or in early June. Rotherham United's head of recruitment Rob Scott, the brother of Swansea's former head of recruitment, Andy, is one of those to have been linked. However, sources at Swansea have stated he is not among the candidates currently in the frame.
