Former national watersports centre on Cumbrae up for sale

The former national watersports centre on Great Cumbrae Island is being sold by sportscotland, which is looking for offers over £550,000.

The former watersports centre is located on the eastern shore of Cumbrae, within walking distance of the ferry slipway to Largs. The site extends to 11.77 acres in all.

The property comprises a principal building which includes a reception area, offices, commercial kitchen, dining hall, classrooms, lounge, gym, changing rooms and a drying room.

Along the southern elevation there is a three-bay extension with storage and workshop accommodation. To the rear of the main building there is an attached seven-bedroom residential chalet with kitchen and lounge, shower and WC facilities, formerly used as staff accommodation.

There are three further residential chalets and to the west of the main building there is land which would lend itself to additional development of self-catering accommodation, subject to obtaining the necessary consents.

There are currently two leases in place at the property, allowing access to the foreshore and jetty.

Harry Stott, a partner at Galbraith, which is handling the sale, said: “Great Cumbrae is a popular destination for daytrippers from Glasgow and is also a holiday destination in itself, being the most accessible of all of Scotland’s islands.

“The property has an extensive principal building with a good range of facilities and a commercial kitchen, although some modernisation is required.

“There are four residential chalets, each sleeping up to 12 people and the property is situated directly on the foreshore overlooking the mainland.

“The sale represents a significant opportunity, subject to the necessary consents, to develop the property into a new tourism business in an excellent location, taking advantage of the growing interest in watersports and tranquil holiday destinations.”

The island is served by two ferries operated by CalMac, which run every 15 minutes during the spring and summer months, reducing to every 30 minutes during the winter.
