Former Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer Sentenced To 20 Years

Daniel Opdyke sentenced to 20 years for involvement in torture and abuse of two Black men.

A former Mississippi law enforcement officer, Daniel Opdyke, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the torture and abuse of two Black men in January 2023. Opdyke is the fifth of six former officers who pleaded guilty to charges related to this incident.

The sentencing took place in state court on Wednesday, with Opdyke's sentence set to run concurrently with his federal sentence. The other five White officers involved in the case, including Rankin County Sheriff’s deputies Hunter Elward, Brett McAlpin, Christian Dedmon, Jeffrey Middleton, and former Richland Police Department officer Joshua Hartfield, received federal prison sentences last month ranging from 10 to 40 years.

The officers' actions were condemned by the community and sparked outrage due to the racial nature of the abuse inflicted on the victims. The case highlighted issues of police brutality and systemic racism within law enforcement.

The sentencing of Opdyke serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability within the criminal justice system. It sends a message that acts of violence and abuse by those in positions of authority will not be tolerated.

As the hearing continues, the victims and their families seek justice and closure, while the community hopes for reforms to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
