Former Michigan Governors Combat Election Misinformation

A bipartisan effort is underway in several swing states, including Michigan, to combat misinformation and attacks on voting and ballot-counting ahead of the upcoming presidential election. The Democracy Defense Project, which includes former officials from various states, aims to build trust in elections through various initiatives such as radio and TV ads, media outreach, and local engagement.

Former Michigan Governor James Blanchard emphasized the importance of speaking out against attempts to question the integrity of the voting process. He highlighted the need to counter false narratives and uphold the accuracy of election results. Joining him in this endeavor are former Republican Governor John Engler, former Democratic Lt. Gov. John Cherry, and former Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop.

This initiative comes in response to ongoing attacks on election systems, particularly in battleground states, by former President Donald Trump and his supporters. Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election results have led to increased scrutiny and challenges to the electoral process.

Michigan initiative led by bipartisan group to defend election integrity.

In Michigan, where several Republicans face charges related to false electors and protests erupted over alleged voter fraud, the push to defend election integrity has gained momentum. Despite Trump's unsubstantiated claims of election fraud, multiple reviews and audits have confirmed President Joe Biden's victory in key states.

While a majority of Americans trust certified election results, there remains a divide along party lines, with Republicans more likely to align with Trump's narrative. The Democracy Defense Project is actively working to counter misinformation and reinforce confidence in the electoral system.

Former officials expressed disappointment over Trump's continued denial of the 2020 election outcome, emphasizing the need to move forward and uphold the legitimacy of the democratic process. The group is operating in eight states, including Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, with a shared commitment to safeguarding the integrity of elections.
