Nearly seven months after being sentenced to more than 38 years in prison for enabling Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán and other drug traffickers to operate their illicit businesses with impunity, Genaro García Luna, a former secretary of public safety in Mexico, could now face a separate case in the United States.
According to local reports, attorneys representing the Mexican government have formally asked a civil judge in Florida to issue a default judgment—a ruling made in the absence of a defendant's response—against García Luna and his wife, Cristina Pereyra. The pair are accused of transferring and investing funds in Florida that allegedly originated from acts of corruption in Mexico.
