Former Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri set to leave Lyon in shock MLS move

Xherdan Shaqiri looks set for another move in a shock transfer to the MLS.

The Liverpool cult hero left Anfield this summer in a £10 million move to Lyon after three years with the Reds.

And after a solid start to life in France, with two goals and three assists in 11 games, the 30-year-old is about to join Chicago Fire in what would be a sensational signing for the American side.

The MLS website confirmed the Chicago franchise "are nearing a deal to acquire" Shaqiri.

Although primarily used in cameo roles off the bench for Liverpool, the Swiss international had a successful team with Liverpool - scoring eight goals and adding nine assists in his three seasons.

He'll be fondly remembered for his winning goals against Manchester United, and two assists in Liverpool's comeback victory over Barcelona - whilst going on to win the Champions League and Premier League with the Reds.

But after struggling with injuries, along with the likes of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott emerging at Liverpool, Shaqiri decided to move on this summer - with Lyon chasing him throughout the summer.

And although he's one of the first name's on the teamsheet, he'll be on the move once again in the coming days.

Shaqiri will become a designated player at Chicago, meaning he'll be one of three players at the club who can be signed which will not count against the hard salary cap in the MLS.

Salary cap's are used throughout American sports, to create a balanced league in which teams cannot overspend in comparison to others.

Multiple sources have now confirmed a move is set to be confirmed within the coming days.
