Former Liberal MP Katie Allen has died following a battle with cancer, aged 59.

Dr Allen's family announced the death in a social media post, with two of her daughters writing messages of love in the comments.

"She spent her life caring for others as a mother, doctor, professor, MP and friend. She is deeply loved," Tuesday's post said.

"She passed in peace surrounded by family and lived a full, beautiful life, all the way to the end.

"We love you so much."

Dr Allen represented the Melbourne seat of Higgins from 2019 to 2022, entering politics after being a paediatrician and medical researcher for more than two decades.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Dr Allen dedicated herself to making Australia a better place.

Liberal senator Jane Hume, a former party room colleague of Dr Allen's, said she was an extraordinary woman.

Former Liberal senator Simon Birmingham said his memories with Dr Allen were a true blessing.

"Katie my friend, my Canberra housemate, my fellow political warrior, and a true servant of the people, may you rest in peace," he wrote.

"All our love to Malcolm and all of Katie's wonderful, loving and supportive family."
