Former Leeds United striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink hopes Dan James stays at Elland Road

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink hopes Leeds United keep ahold of winger Dan James amid rumours the Welsh international could depart Elland Road on deadline day.

James has reportedly drawn interest from a host of suitors including Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Fulham this summer and could be allowed to leave on the final day of the summer transfer window if the right deal presented itself to Leeds.

However, there are a number of different factors which could stand in James' way when it comes to leaving Elland Road, namely whether or not the Whites could add another attacker to their ranks before the window shuts.

With the 2022 Qatar World Cup fast approaching, James needs regular game time at Leeds if he wants to be fully fit and raring to go for Wales.

There's no doubt James will make Rob Page's World Cup squad, but it would certainly be preferable for both he and Wales if he travelled to Qatar fully match fit.

However, Hasselbaink, who made over 80 appearances for Leeds during his two year spell with the Whites, hopes they hold onto James, with the current Burton Albion manager a strong believer in the winger needing more game time under Jesse Marsch.

"He needs game time but I would like to see him getting game time at Leeds," Hasselbaink told Sky Sports News.

"I wouldn't want to see him go to another club. I think Leeds will end up needing him, he's somebody young, he's somebody still developing.

"There is a lot of pressure at Leeds with the crowd at Elland Road, but I think the more and more he plays the better he will become. I would like him to stay at Leeds if he can."
