Former Jaguars QB gets look from Giants

Former Jaguars quarterback C.J. Beathard worked out for the Giants on Monday, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Jacksonville released Beathard, its former three-year backup quarterback to Trevor Lawrence, with an injury settlement in August after he hurt his groin during the preseason. His workout with New York marks his first reported activity in the NFL since being cut.

The Jaguars released Beathard understanding they would have to wait an extended period of time before bringing him back.

Per NFL rules, players who receive an injury settlement are free to sign with other teams upon clearance from their injury. However, the team they settle with must wait three additional weeks after clearance to re-acquire the player.

“We’ve got to wait at least seven weeks before that becomes an option for us,” Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said regarding the possibility of re-signing Beathard on Aug. 27.

“It was a significant injury and it’s going to keep him away from ball for a while, at least four weeks of the season. Could be longer; could be shorter. Depends on how quickly he heals and how the rehab goes, but that’s the timeline right now.”

The Jaguars’ last win came with Beathard starting at quarterback, against the Panthers in Week 17 of the 2023 season while Lawrence was injured and unavailable.

Beathard completed 49-of-66 passes for 417 yards with one touchdown and one interception over 13 appearances with Jacksonville between 2021-23, bringing his career passing line to 340-of-563 for 3,886 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

The Jaguars temporarily brought quarterback E.J. Perry in to replace Beathard during the preseason. They relegated Perry to the practice squad on Aug. 28, released him from the unit Aug. 29 and replaced him with undrafted rookie passer John Rhys Plumlee Aug. 30.
