Former Ireland striker Niall Quinn reveals he left behind a major award in a pub one night

Former footballer Niall Quinn reveals one of his Man of the Match trophies is sitting behind the bar of Kehoes for years after he got drunk and left it there.

The former Ireland striker was awarded Eircom Man of the Match back during his Irish international playing days.

But it appears the Arsenal player got so drunk celebrating in popular Dublin pub Kehoes that he left one of the awards behind him. He only noticed it years later when he spotted it sitting on a shelf behind the bar.

He said: “When I was walking in here just coming up towards Dawson’s Street and I was going by Kehoes and I was thinking of the nights I had…I went into Kehoes there one time a couple of years ago and I was waiting to get my drink and I said ‘Jesus that looks like one of them old Man of the Match things’ and I went ‘F*ck me, that’s mine’..

“It was ‘Eircom Man of the Match Niall Quinn’ and it was behind the bar. I must’ve left it there when I was drunk one night, I don’t know,” he told Doireann Garrihy’s Laugh of Your Life podcast.

But Niall said this trophy was better off behind the bar of the popular Dublin pub, saying his wife Gillian would have had it put away at home.

Asked by host Doireann if he asked for it back, he said: “Ah no, I’m kind of proud it is in there.

“Gill would have it in the attic by now,” he said laughing.

Niall recently revealed he finally fulfilled a decades old promise to his mother when he graduated from DCU earlier this month.

The Perrystown man told his mother Mary he would complete his education in England when he signed for Arsenal at age 16 but didn't initially stick to his word.

However, Niall's proud mum, who is now 93-years-old, finally got to see her son keep his promise when he received his Masters' of History from the north Dublin college.

The former Man City and Sunderland striker was encouraged to pursue his love of history by his wife Gillian, son Mikey and daughter Aisling, all of whom are DCU graduates. Niall said "force of nature" Aisling was particularly instrumental in giving him the push to return to education.

The 92-times capped Republic of Ireland international said: “I found myself living in a house of study. They were all studying and I found myself as the odd one out.

"Aisling is a tremendous force of nature and she kept pushing me and told me I would love it. Gillian and Mikey kept chipping in too."

The Mighty Quinn developed a love of history in school but was gutted not to get top marks in his exams. This spurred him on to study the subject at third level.

“When I left for Arsenal, I had done what used to be called the Inter Cert," he said. "I got a B in history, and I was devastated it was not an A because I loved the subject. To me history was fun and it made me tick.

"I played for my country and was commended for that but I now know far more about Ireland and that makes me happy," he said at the time. "For anyone considering a return to education, I would beseech any person with the slightest itch to go back, to just do it. There is no down side, it is so fulfilling."
