A former Republican congresswoman, Barbara Comstock, who represented Virginia’s 10th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019, has announced her intention to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming 2024 election. Comstock's decision stems from her disapproval of former President Donald Trump, particularly in light of the events surrounding the January 6 Capitol protest.
Comstock expressed her concerns about Trump's refusal to accept the election results and his perceived threats to democracy. She emphasized the need to move forward and turn the page following the tumultuous events of January 6, stating, 'After Jan. 6, after Donald Trump has refused for four years to acknowledge that he lost, and his threats against democracy, I think it’s important to turn the page. That’s why I will be voting for the vice president.'
In addition to her criticism of Trump, Comstock raised issues regarding the Trump-Vance ticket, highlighting concerns about the former president's behavior and legal troubles. She pointed out Trump's felony conviction and allegations of mishandling classified documents as further reasons for her decision to support Vice President Harris.
Comstock's endorsement of Harris comes at a significant time, as it was made just before the start of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Vice President Harris is set to formally accept the Democratic nomination. Comstock's public stance reflects a growing trend of political figures crossing party lines or distancing themselves from certain candidates based on principles and values.
