Former Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle has revealed a fan told her of his horror that her nails weren’t polished.
The Derry singer opened up about the pressures she felt to look perfect all the time when she was in Girls Aloud. Nadine recalled how one fan went to kiss her hand while in a lift going down from a private rooftop bar in New York but was horrified when he saw her nails weren’t polished.
She said: “I had a strange encounter in a New York lift when a stranger was horrified by my un-manicured nails. this guy was like 'Oh let me kiss your hand', and I was like, 'OK', and he was like 'Oh my God, your nails aren't painted!'

"You literally would have thought I had two heads, this man was horrified at the fact that as a female I was out and about, living my life with unpolished nails. Now that can't be the world we live in.
“I was like ‘Your nails aren’t painted either’. Is this now a requirement to be a human being? Do we have to have our nails painted? No. Not buying into it. Get lost.
“It was in a packed lift. He was almost afraid. He was so shocked that it was happening. I just thought, ‘oh bless you, how do you get through the day?’ If a woman with unpainted nails is so offensive, how is your life?”
The mum-of-one opened up about her insecurities about her looks while being in the band. Speaking to Scott McGlynn on his show, Celebrity Skin Talk, she said: “When I was younger and going through that phase of having to look perfect all the time, I would find a reflection anywhere, literally anywhere, a butter knife, I was like, is everything still there.
"So yeah, that was years of just being exhausted with caring far too much and I had to realise, and once it made sense that this wasn't for me, most of the time it was for strangers.”
Nadine also talked about surviving in the Australian jungle on I’m A Celebrity on just sunscreen. “I used sunscreen on everything. I used it on my hair, on my face. I had a whole set up, I was good.”
She said producers asked her how she would feel being make-up free on telly. “That was one of the questions producers asked before I went in… they were like ‘there is no make up, are you going to be ok?’ I was like, ‘yes, I’m going to be fine’,” she said laughing.
“We didn’t even have lip balm. That was another thing. There were no sunglasses… it was an experience, an experiment to see how you get on and, in my case, it was a really good experience.”
But she sidestepped the question about whether or not she would take part in the I’m A Celeb All Star version of the show, which airs next year in South Africa.
Nadine said she would prefer to go back into the jungle without the cameras.
“Wouldn’t it be great if you could go to the jungle and they didn’t film it. You could have all of that stuff, sleep outside in the wild. You could have all of that but they don’t film you doing it.”
She added that she really enjoyed the experience, adding: “And I got to jump out of a helicopter, which I will never do again’.”
