Former Florida State University quarterback Marcus Outzen, known affectionately as 'The Rooster,' passed away at the age of 46. His son Colton announced the sad news on social media, expressing his love for his father.
Outzen's death was attributed to complications related to hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare immune deficiency disorder that affects the proper functioning of the immune system. Born in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Outzen played under the guidance of legendary coach Bobby Bowden from 1996 to 2000.
Outzen rose to prominence as the starting quarterback for the Seminoles after an injury sidelined the previous starter during the 1998 season. Notably, he led the team to victory in his first career starts against Wake Forest and Florida, with the latter being the fourth-ranked team in the nation at the time.
During his time at FSU, Outzen accumulated 1,074 passing yards and five touchdowns. Following his football career, he transitioned into the medical sales industry and resided near Tampa Bay with his wife and children.
Reflecting on Outzen's impact, former teammate Bobby Rhodes shared, 'Marcus was a good friend to a lot of people. People liked him, on and off the field. This is so sad.' Outzen's legacy at Florida State University will be remembered by fans and teammates alike.
