A former FBI informant accused of fabricating a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden’s family has agreed to plead guilty to federal charges, according to court papers filed Thursday.
The informant, who was arrested in February, allegedly falsely reported to the FBI in June 2020 that executives associated with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid Hunter Biden and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016. The informant claimed that an executive hired Hunter Biden to protect the company through his father, Joe Biden, from potential issues.
However, prosecutors revealed that the informant had only routine business dealings with the company in 2017 and that he expressed bias against Joe Biden while he was a presidential candidate. The informant has now agreed to plead guilty to charges of tax evasion and causing a false FBI record.
The agreement reached with the Justice Department special counsel includes a recommended sentence of at least 48 months behind bars and no more than 72 months for the informant. The informant's attorneys have not yet provided a comment on the matter.
This development comes just weeks after new tax evasion charges were filed against the informant, leading to the plea deal. The informant's guilty plea is a significant step in resolving the case and bringing closure to the fabricated bribery scheme allegations.
