Former England right-back makes ‘too early’ claim on Newcastle United’s Champions League hopes

Glen Johnson has claimed any talk of Newcastle United reaching the Champions League is premature. An astonishing start to the campaign has the Magpies in third place, having lost just one game - a controversial defeat to Liverpool - all season.

Expectation levels are rising on Tyneside and supporters are already fantasising over European trips returning after a nine-year exile. Given the underwhelming start by Liverpool and Chelsea, fans are starting to believe a special season is in the offing.

Eddie Howe has been keen to manage the optimism at St James’ Park, insisting the Toon camp are just “happy” with where they are in the table. However, talk of the possibilities which seemed far-fetched not long ago is inevitable given Newcastle’s promising start.

Now, former England and Liverpool defender Johnson has refuted suggestions United will make the top four. Speaking to Bookies Bonuses, the 38-year-old has questioned whether Newcastle have the squad to continue their current form.

“I think it's too early to talk about that (Champions League),” Johnson said. “They stayed up last year by the skin of their teeth. They've been in unbelievable form at the moment and that takes some doing, so they need the credit.

“I don't think they're going to finish in the top four. To kick on and really challenge these top, top teams - it takes some doing. Anyone can do it for three months, but to do it over the course of a season and then do it again a season after, then you need to be a serious team and a serious squad.”
