Former Dumfries Midi Matt Currie part of Scotland's summer tour squad in South America

Former Dumfries Midi Matt Currie is in South America with Scotland’s summer tour squad.

And he could make his senior international debut, albeit in an A team match, against Chile tomorrow.

The 21-year-old centre, who hails from Auldgirth and plays for Edinburgh, has seen his chances of selection increase with the news that Huw Jones has had to drop out of the squad.

And he is keen to get involved although he admitted his chance may have come a little sooner than expected.

He told The Offside Line: “It has come around pretty quickly to be fair. I wouldn’t have said it was on my radar necessarily. But it’s always a goal to play for your country and it’s something I’ve been driving towards for a long time.”

Matt has represented Scotland at under 16, 18, 19 and 20 level,

And he has trained with Gregor Townsend’s national squad in the past.

He added: “Making the step up to Scotland is pretty surreal but cool at the same time.

“The nation’s best players are here, so it’s an awesome opportunity for me to learn as a young player and play rugby at a high level.

“The senior players have all been really helpful and there’s been some good crack with the boys so far.”

Matt is also being tipped to make the 23 strong selections for the tests in Argentina although he is not thinking that far ahead.

He said: “Those Argentina games are probably too far away at the moment.

“We’re just focussing on the Chile match coming up next Saturday. We know that they are a good team, they beat Canada, so I’m just concentrating on that.”

Scotland A play Chile tomorrow, kick off 9pm, and the match is live on Premier Sports 1. The senior team will play three tests in Argentina on July 2, 9 and 16, all kicking off at 8.10pm.
