Newly released audio recordings have revealed troubling details about the actions of a former Sangamon County, Illinois, sheriff's deputy who was involved in a fatal shooting incident. The recordings show that the deputy, Sean Grayson, had previously been reprimanded at another agency for filing an inaccurate report about a traffic stop and pursuit.
During a review on November 9, 2022, Grayson was questioned by Logan County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Nathan Miller about the specifics of a chase that Grayson had reported. Miller expressed concerns that Grayson's report could constitute official misconduct and policy violations. Grayson admitted to inaccuracies in his report, stating that he believed he was on a different street than he had indicated.
Miller emphasized the importance of integrity in law enforcement, stating that stretching the law could lead to serious consequences. Grayson's history of moving between multiple law enforcement agencies and facing DUI charges further raised red flags about his conduct.
The internal review at the Logan County Sheriff's Office revealed that Grayson had engaged in a high-speed pursuit that ended in a collision with a deer. The disciplinary records recommended additional training for Grayson in report writing, high-stress decision-making, and understanding department policies.
Grayson's troubled history came to a head when he responded to a call about a prowler and fatally shot Sonya Massey, failing to provide aid after the shooting. Bodycam footage captured Massey's confrontation with Grayson before the tragic incident unfolded.
Despite the mounting evidence of misconduct and questionable behavior, Grayson's attorney declined to comment on the matter. The revelations from the audio recordings paint a concerning picture of Grayson's actions and raise serious questions about his fitness for law enforcement duties.
